Motion Is Read as Personality
■ Same machine, same cup, and yet a completely different impression Tsukamukun A and B are the same machine setting down the same cup. Only the manner differs. Yet Hakobukun flinches at A and wants to thank B. People read not the outcome of a motion but the path it takes to get there.
■ The quality of motion becomes a language of intent For a machine without a mouth, acceleration, deceleration and the timing of a stop become its vocabulary. Rough motion reads as careless; gentle motion reads as considerate, whether or not care exists. Observers infer intent from movement and assemble a personality.
■ Conclusion: Designing motion means designing the character people will meet As Tsukamukun puts it, motion becomes character. Trajectory and speed belong on the UX agenda alongside appearance and voice. Even motion that merely meets spec carries an unintended personality, so decide the impression first and derive the movement from it. A robot introduces itself through motion before it speaks.
